Meetings

We meet for a group  get together on the fourth Tuesday of every month at the Paterson Centre in Swanmore, Hampshire.

The programme for these meeting is varied with speakers ranging from necessary, interesting, factual information to more lighthearted subjects.

Built into the group meetings are arts and crafts, musical afternoons and games suitable for those living with Dementia.

Our main expense is the hire of the hall once a month and we are constantly looking for ways  to raise the necessary funds to maintain the Group.

We receive donations from – local churches, various (Freemason) Lodges, parish Councils and Group members some “in memoriam”.

We sometimes have stands at the local summer fairs.

History

The group has a band of wonderful volunteers who make certain that the Carers are given a break whilst their loved ones are safe and involved in their own activities. One of the most enjoyable features, as always, is the cup of tea, biscuits and chat with the friends towards the latter part of the Meeting.

Funds

All proceeds from the book are donated to the Meon Valley Carers Group by the author, who has had first hand experience of caring for a loved one living with dementia.

The Group was established in November 2003 and acquired Charitable Status in October 2004.

In 2021 with dwindling numbers and the end of the COVID pandemic, which had halted meetings, we partnered with Andover Mind to bring new life into the Group.

You may wonder what the title of the Group denotes? People often ask how does the Meon Valley Carers Group help with the devastating news of the diagnosis from which there is no cure! From talking to Carers, the main comment from them is that by joining the group, they no longer feel isolated.

Meon Valley Carers Group can help to alleviate some of the problems mentioned. People who join our group find that sharing their experiences with others in a similar situation brings a feeling of normality back to their lives and lasting friendships are often made.

New Members are always warmly welcomed with no joining fee to pay.

As well as the obvious support through the information and signposting, that the MVCG can direct them towards, there is the companionship of being able to talk to others going through a similar caring role.

Our aim is to demonstrate that life does not end when Dementia begins.

Emily’s Heli-Hat and Other Stories

This charming children’s book has been written by one of the volunteers.  A delightful gift for children aged 4 and upwards.
